IACT’s 2026 Green Drives Conference and Expo brought together fleet managers, industry leaders, public-sector partners, utilities, technology providers, and clean transportation advocates for a full day of learning, networking, and hands-on exploration at the Danada House in Wheaton.
With nearly 175 registered participants, a dozen exhibitors, and more than two dozen vehicles and pieces of equipment on display, this year’s event reflected both the growing interest in clean transportation and the practical need for solutions that work in the real world. The program reinforced a core IACT principle: there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Success depends on matching the right fuel and technology to the right job.
The day opened with a video message from Governor J.B. Pritzker, who highlighted Illinois’ ongoing commitment to clean transportation and clean energy. That message set the tone for a program focused on opportunity, innovation, and implementation.
Attendees then heard a broad overview of alternative fuel options currently available for fleets, followed by presentations featuring real-world examples of fleet transition strategies. Sessions explored electric vehicles, propane, renewable natural gas and compressed natural gas, biobased fuels, and advanced internal combustion technologies. Throughout the day, speakers emphasized operational performance, cost considerations, infrastructure availability, and the importance of planning for the specific demands of each fleet.
One of the most valuable aspects of Green Drives was the emphasis on practical application. Fleet operators heard firsthand examples of how organizations are adopting alternative fuels in ways that fit their duty cycles and business needs. Presenters also discussed the importance of aligning fuel choice, vehicle technology, and infrastructure investment with actual operating conditions rather than pursuing a single solution for every use case.
The conference also addressed the growing importance of funding strategy and workforce development. Attendees received guidance on competitive grant application narratives and updates on programs that can help support fleet transitions and charging investments. At the same time, speakers highlighted the need to build the workforce necessary to support vehicle deployment, charging infrastructure, maintenance, and long-term system reliability.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity for attendees to ride and drive a wide range of vehicles powered by different fuel types. This hands-on experience gave participants the chance to see technologies up close, ask detailed questions, and better understand how various options may fit their own operations.
Green Drives 2026 also featured IACT’s first Featured Fleet recognition, highlighting the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. As host of the event, the District shared its sustainability efforts and demonstrated how a multifuel strategy can support both operational goals and environmental stewardship. That example captured an important message from the conference: progress often comes from thoughtful, flexible deployment rather than a single technology pathway.
The afternoon included strong interest in fleet electrification, with updates on climate planning, EV-ready community programs, workforce training, charging asset management, theft and vandalism mitigation, utility programs, and opportunities for medium- and heavy-duty vehicle adoption. Attendees also received information on state funding opportunities for EV infrastructure, passenger vehicle rebates, and future truck deployment support.
At the same time, Green Drives maintained a truly multi-fuel perspective. Sessions on propane, CNG/RNG, and biobased fuels made clear that many fleets are pursuing cleaner transportation through a range of pathways. That broad lens is one of the conference’s greatest strengths, and it reflects IACT’s ongoing commitment to helping fleets identify the solutions that are most practical, reliable, and cost-effective for their needs.
In addition to the technical content, Green Drives created space for relationship-building across sectors. Fleets, fuel providers, utilities, nonprofits, and public agencies had the opportunity to connect, compare experiences, and explore partnerships. Those conversations are often where progress begins.
Green Drives 2026 demonstrated that Illinois has the expertise, leadership, and momentum to keep moving forward. The technologies are advancing, the support systems are growing, and fleets are increasingly looking for trusted guidance on how to navigate change.
